Pipe Fitting Types: Thread Standards, Configurations, and Applications

Pipe fittingsPipe fittings provide essential connections, directional changes, branching, and terminations for threaded piping systems. They serve widely in instrumentation, process control, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic distribution wherever reliable threaded connections are required. This article mainly shows different Pipe Fitting Types.

Pipe fittings come in all sorts of shapes and thread types, and we classify them in two primary ways: by thread standard and by geometric configuration.

Thread Standards

Metric (M) DIN 3852 Metric regions

General System Advantages and Limitations

Threaded connections offer inherent advantages. The installation requires no welding equipment or certified welders—a set of wrenches suffices for most operations. This renders threaded connections particularly valuable for field repairs and emergency maintenance, especially in remote sites or overseas projects where welding resources may not be readily available. Furthermore, the detachable nature of threaded joints provides significant system flexibility—modular expansions, temporary line setups, and phased construction can all be executed conveniently, without the permanence inherent to welded connections.

However, threaded joints have inherent limitations. Under vibratory conditions, threaded joints tend to loosen over time. And achieving a fully leak-tight seal is more demanding with threaded connections than with welded ones—it depends on thread machining quality and proper application of sealant or tape. In high-pressure or safety-related services, the convenience of threading shouldn’t be the only consideration; these limitations need to be taken into account.

Classification by Geometric Configuration

Based on shape and function, pipe fittings are categorized into the following main types.

Adapters

Adapters facilitate essential transitions across varied thread standards and between male and female port setups. Adapters are indispensable in mixed-standard systems, frequently found in international chemical processing plants and legacy hydraulic systems where disparate equipment must be integrated. A key advantage is their versatility in accommodating mixed-standard systems. In applications where NPT and ISO standards are combined, adapters eliminate the need for complete re-piping, thereby reducing time and labor costs.

Notably, every adapter adds two potential leak paths to the system. It is critical to ensure that the pressure rating of the adapter matches or exceeds the system”s working pressure to maintain integrity.

Product Series:

  • Female NPT to Male NPT
  • Female NPT to Male ISO Tapered
  • Female NPT to Male ISO Parallel
  • Female NPT to Male SAE/MS
  • Female ISO Parallel to Male NPT
  • Female NPT to Male RT
  • Heavy-Wall Female NPT to Male NPT (10K Series)

Available in 1/8″ through 1-1/4″. Material choices are 316 stainless, carbon steel, and brass—each handles different corrosives and temps. And if you’re dealing with high pressure, the 10K heavy-wall series is rated at 10,000 psi.

Bushings (Reducing Bushings)

Bushings connect pipes of different sizes, with a larger male thread on one end and a smaller female thread on the other. They serve in industrial plumbing and pneumatic systems where you need to adjust flow between components of different diameters.

Compared to larger reducing couplings, bushings are more compact and take up less space, making them a practical choice in tight installations. Both ends have standard threads, so ordinary wrenches are sufficient—no special tools are needed. Some sizes offer ratings up to 20,000 psi, which covers extreme high-pressure applications as well.

Two issues come up often during installation: bottoming out (threading all the way in without achieving a seal), and cracking the bushing wall from over-tightening. Both are related to torque control and should be monitored during installation.

Product Series:

  • Male NPT to Female NPT (reducing), sizes ranging from 1/8″ to 1-1/2″
  • Male ISO Tapered to Female ISO Tapered (reducing), sizes ranging from 1/4″ to 1-1/2″

Materials include 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, and brass. When selecting a model, it is recommended that the size reduction not exceed two sizes to avoid excessive turbulence. Strictly control the torque during installation; the working pressure is determined by the weaker of the two ends.

Caps & Plugs

Use them to seal the ends of piping systems. Caps close off male threaded pipe ends; plugs seal female threaded ports. These are standard in virtually every industry for temporarily or permanently closing off lines during maintenance or for future expansion ports.

Pipe caps and plugs provide a fast, reliable, and cost-effective way to seal the ends of pipes. Installation is quick, you just need to simply screw them in, no welding is required. The external hex design of the pipe caps facilitates installation and removal with a wrench, while the low-profile design is suitable for space-constrained locations. Hollow hex plugs are suitable for sealing inspection ports that require repeated access. All products are reusable—remove them during maintenance and reinstall afterward.

Caps and plugs seal off the ends of piping. At these locations, flow stops and fluid may stagnate. In pharmaceutical and food processing applications, cleanliness requirements are strict. Fluid stagnation at caps and plugs can lead to localized corrosion or bacterial growth. Also, these fittings do not provide pressure relief, so in high-pressure systems they are best used with relief valves. Caps and plugs are not interchangeable—selection depends on whether the pipe end has male or female threads.

Product Series:

  • Pipe Caps (Female NPT / Female ISO Parallel), available from 1/16″ to 1″
  • Pipe Plugs (Male NPT)
  • Hollow Hex Plugs, designed for easy wrench operation.

When selecting a model, first confirm whether the end of the pipe has external or internal threads. Do not remove the plugging device while the system is under pressure. For long-term plugging, we recommend using stainless steel to prevent the threads from rusting and seizing.

Couplings

Couplings join two male-threaded pipes, with female threads on both ends. Found in long-run piping for oil and gas transport or general water distribution where standard pipe lengths must be extended.Couplings offer ease of installation and are highly cost-effective for straight-line connections, maintaining a consistent flow path.

They provide no flexibility; once installed, they cannot compensate for thermal expansion or vibration without additional expansion joints.

Product Series:

  • Hex Couplings (Female NPT)
  • Heavy-Wall Hex Couplings (10K Series)
  • Hex Couplings (Female ISO Tapered)

Sizes range from 1/16″ to 1-1/4″. Materials available include 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, and brass. 10K Series carry a rating of up to 10,000 psi

Crosses

Use crosses to split flow into four directions. Common in complex manifolds, fire protection sprinkler systems, and pneumatic control panels where centralized distribution is required. A single cross replaces multiple tees, reducing the total number of fittings and potential leak points in a multi-directional system.

Installation Considerations

However, Cross experiences complex stresses, multidirectional stresses within the system, as pipes from all four directions may exert forces and moments; therefore, you must ensure adequate pipe support. Flow distribution may be uneven, depending on the length and resistance of the pipes at each outlet, and must be carefully calculated during the design phase. The convergence or divergence of fluid at the four-way fitting can generate significant turbulence and pressure drops, which must be taken into account in the system’s hydraulic calculations. The space required for installation and maintenance is also relatively large.

Product Series:

  • Male Crosses (Male NPT)
  • Female Crosses (Female NPT / Female ISO Tapered)

Sizes range from 1/16″ to 1-1/2″. Materials available include 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, and brass.

Elbows

Elbows change the flow direction of piping systems without requiring pipe bending.

Essential in architectural plumbing and machinery cooling lines where piping must navigate around obstacles or corners. They provide a rigid and standardized method for 90° or 45° turns, ensuring predictable flow geometry and ease of layout design.

Performance Considerations

Sharp turns in elbows increase friction loss and can lead to erosion at high velocities. In abrasive slurry applications, elbows are often the first components to wear out.

Product Series:

  • Male Elbows: Male NPT / Male ISO Taper, 90°, Sizes 1/16″ – 1″
  • Female Elbows: Female NPT, 90°, Sizes 1/16″ – 1-1/4″
  • Male and Female Elbows: Female NPT to Male NPT / Female ISO Taper to Male ISO Taper, 90°, Sizes 1/16″ – 1-1/4″
  • 45° Male and Female Elbows: Female NPT to Male NPT / Female ISO Taper to Male ISO Taper, 45°, Sizes 1/16″ – 1-1/4″

Materials available include 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, and brass. For piping with multiple elbows, check that the total pressure drop stays within the allowable limit. For fluids containing particles, we recommend thick-walled elbows or 316SS. When installing street elbows, mind the tightening direction to avoid misalignment after full assembly. Where space and layout permit, using street elbows in place of separate elbow-and-adapter combinations reduces the number of threaded joints.

Nipples

Nipples are straight connectors with male threads on both ends. Different lengths accommodate various installation space requirements. Used extensively in instrumentation, boiler assemblies, and connecting valves to manifolds. Nipples allow for precise distance adjustments between components. Hex versions provide easy wrenching surfaces, which prevents damage to the threads during installation.

Close nipples, while compact, offer very little surface for tools, making them difficult to remove once they have been in service for long periods.

Product Series:

  • Hex Fittings: Standard lengths, sizes 1/8″ – 1″
  • Long Hex Fittings: Lengths 1.5″ – 6″, sizes 1/8″ – 1″
  • Short Fittings: Fixed lengths, sizes 1/16″ – 1″
  • Special Tube Fittings: Customizable lengths, sizes 1/8″ – 1″

Thread combinations cover male NPT to male NPT, male NPT to male ISO taper, male NPT to male ISO parallel, male NPT to male SAE, male NPT to male metric, and male metric to male metric.  Materials are  316 stainless steel, carbon steel, or brass.

Choose the length based on available space. For longer runs, intermediate supports are advisable. For close nipples that will stay in place for extended periods, a thin coat of anti-seize on the threads before installation can save trouble later.

Tees

Tees split or combine flow from a main line from a main line, with a straight run and a perpendicular branch. Standard in domestic water lines, HVAC systems, and process piping where a branch line is needed for a secondary process or instrument. They allow for efficient branching without needing to cut and weld complex joints, facilitating modular system design.

The perpendicular branch creates a high-turbulence zone. This can result in increased noise and potential vibration in high-velocity gas systems.

Product Series:

  • Male Tees: Male NPT / Male ISO Taper, sizes 1/16″ – 1-1/2″
  • Female Tees: Female NPT / Female ISO Taper, sizes 1/16″ – 1-1/2″
  • Heavy-Wall Female Tees (10K Series): Female NPT, sizes 1/16″ – 1″
  • Male Street Tees: Female NPT to Male NPT, sizes 1/16″ – 1″
  • Female Branch Tees: Female NPT / Female ISO Taper, sizes 1/16″ – 1″
  • Female Run Tees: Internal NPT / Internal ISO Taper, sizes 1/16″ – 1″
  • Male Branch Tees: External NPT / External ISO Taper, sizes 1/16″ – 1″

Materials include 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, and brass. The 10K series has a maximum pressure rating of 10,000 psi (689 bar). When selecting a fitting, note that the difference between a run tee and a branch tee lies in the position of the branch port relative to the straight run. In a run tee, the branch is located in the middle of the straight run, while in a branch tee, the branch is offset toward one end. Avoid installing flow meters that are sensitive to turbulence near the branch port.

Unions

Unions allow for quick disconnection of piping systems without full disassembly of the line. You install them near pumps,  valves, or filters that require frequent maintenance, removal, or replacement. Their primary advantage is maintenance efficiency. By turning a single nut, the system can be opened without disturbing the rest of the fixed piping.

Unions rely on a mechanical seal (often a metal-to-metal or O-ring seat). If the piping is misaligned, the union will not seal correctly and is prone to leakage under high vibration.

Product Series:

  • Union Ball Joints (Female NPT / Female ISO Tapered), Sizes range from 1/8″ to 1″.

316 stainless steel construction. The 1/8″ size has a working pressure of 8,400 psi (578 bar); the working temperature is limited by the seal material. When selecting a fitting, ensure that the system temperature does not exceed the temperature limit of the O-ring or gasket. If the pipes are misaligned, adjust them first before installing the coupling; do not rely on the coupling to force the pipes straight. Apply moderate torque during installation; over-tightening may damage the sealing surfaces. we recommend replacing the O-ring after disassembly to ensure a reliable seal.

FAQ

Q1. What are heavy-duty (10K) series pipe fittings? When should they be used?

The 10K series is our heavy-duty line, rated at 10,000 psi. You would use these when your system pressure exceeds what the standard series can handle. They’re made of 316 stainless steel, with thicker walls than the standard series—designed to keep things safe under extreme pressure.

Q2. What is the difference between the RT series and the RS series?

RT series uses ISO/BSP tapered threads (ISO 7/1). The seal comes from the interference fit between the threads themselves, so you’ll need PTFE tape or sealant during installation. The RS series uses ISO/BSP parallel threads (ISO 228). The threads don’t seal on their own—they rely on an O-ring or gasket to do the job. These two are different in both connection type and sealing principle, and they are not interchangeable.

Q3. Carbon steel pipe fittings are inexpensive, but will they rust quickly?

No. All NPTLOK carbon steel fittings are electro-galvanized. In dry indoor settings, they last a long time without issues. If you’re handling corrosive media, or if the installation is in a damp or salty environment, then stainless steel is the better choice.
