Ferrule fitting has three crucial components: a nut, one or two ferrules (single ferrule fitting or double ferrule fitting), and a body. The ferrule is key to a seamless fluid system.
Ferrule fitting connects the tubes in an instrumentation, hydraulic, or pneumatic system. The purpose of a ferrule is to provide a leak-proof and strong seal connection between the tubing or pipe and the fitting in various high-pressure applications, ensuring the integrity of the fluid system.
The ferrules are made of various metals, including stainless steel, super duplex, and alloys, which can withstand higher pressures and a wide range of temperatures.
The ferrule sizes (OD-Out Diameter)used in instrumentation applications are available in metric or inch size: 3 mm- 25.4 mm, 1/8”-1”.
As we mentioned before, a ferrule fitting contains three parts: a nut, one ferrule or two ferrules, and a body. If a ferrule fitting with one ferrule, we call it a single ferrule fitting, and if a ferrule fitting with two ferrules, we call it a double ferrule fitting.
Single Ferrule Fitting
If the material of your project is soft, like brass or plastic, in a lower-pressure application, then the single ferrule fitting is more likely to be used. The designed one ferrule with an angled front end is compressed into the fitting body and grips the tubing or pipe at the same time. The cost of a single ferrule fitting is cheaper than that of a double ferrule fitting.
Double Ferrule Fitting
When using harder materials such as stainless steel, Monel, or super duplex in higher-pressure applications, the double ferrule fitting is the preferred choice. The two-ferrule system creates an advanced and highly sealed and gripped system, making double ferrule fittings suitable for higher-pressure applications (up to 10,000psi) such as the oil and gas industry, chemical processing, and so on.
