Pipe nipple length can be confusing, especially when you’re choosing a part for a specific installation gap. You might order the right length, but after installation the gap between the fittings is smaller than expected. That’s because overall length includes both threaded ends, and part of each end sits inside the mating connection.
Below, we’ll go through how to measure pipe nipple length, how to read the length chart, and how thread engagement affects the length you need.
Pipe Nipple Length Chart
The following table lists male NPT close nipples and hex long nipples.
| Nominal NPT Size | Close Nipple Overall Length, in. (mm) | Hex Long Nipple Overall Length Options, in. (mm) |
| 1/16 | 0.75 (19.1) | – |
| 1/8 | 0.75 (19.1) | 1.50 (38.1), 2.00 (50.8), 2.50 (63.5), 3.00 (76.2) |
| 1/4 | 1.12 (28.4) | 1.50 (38.1), 2.00 (50.8), 2.50 (63.5), 3.00 (76.2), 4.00 (101.6) |
| 3/8 | 1.12 (28.4) | 1.50 (38.1), 2.00 (50.8), 2.50 (63.5), 3.00 (76.2), 4.00 (101.6) |
| 1/2 | 1.50 (38.1) | 2.00 (50.8), 3.00 (76.2), 4.00 (101.6), 6.00 (152.4) |
| 3/4 | 1.50 (38.1) | 2.00 (50.8), 3.00 (76.2), 4.00 (101.6) |
| 1 | 1.88 (47.8) | 3.00 (76.2), 4.00 (101.6) |
Lengths are shown in inches, with millimeter equivalents in parentheses. Overall length includes both threaded ends.
Reading the chart: 1/2-inch NPT nipples
A 1/2-inch NPT nipple does not have one fixed length. The catalog lists:
| منتج | Ordering Number | Overall Length |
| Close nipple | SS-CN-MN8 | 1.50 in. (38.1 mm) |
| Hex long nipple | SS-HL-MN8-2 | 2.00 in. (50.8 mm) |
| Hex long nipple | SS-HL-MN8-3 | 3.00 in. (76.2 mm) |
| Hex long nipple | SS-HL-MN8-4 | 4.00 in. (101.6 mm) |
| Hex long nipple | SS-HL-MN8-6 | 6.00 in. (152.4 mm) |
All five share the same معاهدة حظر الانتشار النووي connection size, but their overall lengths are different. When you order, specify both the thread size and the length.
How to Measure Pipe Nipple Length
Find the length reference
Check the product drawing before measuring. L runs between the two end faces, including the threaded portions.
The hex length, unthreaded center section, and individual threaded-end dimensions describe different features. None replaces the overall length.
Measure between the end faces
For short nipples, use a caliper. Put the jaws flat on both ends and keep it parallel to the nipple. For hex long nipples, use a ruler or tape that can hold the required tolerance. Wipe the ends clean first—dirt can throw off the reading. Close nipples are the same: measure end to end, even if there’s no visible unthreaded section in the middle.
Check the drawing and tolerance
Record the length and unit, then compare the result with the product drawing. For example, a measured overall length of 50.8 mm equals 2.00 inches. This is separate from the nipple’s nominal thread size.
If your project requires a length tolerance, state it on the drawing or purchase specification. The catalog length alone does not define the permitted manufacturing variation.
Measure a loose nipple whenever possible. On an installed nipple, the visible section excludes the portions inside the ports.
Overall Length vs. Installed Gap
A 2-inch nipple does not create a 2-inch gap between two fittings. Both ends enter the female ports.
Here, the installed gap means the axial distance between the entrance faces of the two female connections. It does not mean valve center-to-center distance or the distance between internal shoulders.
For this layout:
Installed gap = Overall length − Insertion depth at each end
The calculation is simple. The insertion depths require confirmation.
Check the fit using dimensions
Consider the SS-HL-MN8-2, a 1/2-inch NPT hex long nipple with an overall length of 50.8 mm.
If the two female-port faces are 50 mm apart, only 0.8 mm in total remains for insertion into both ports. This nipple cannot provide the required thread engagement across that gap.
The next listed length, SS-HL-MN8-3, measures 76.2 mm. It leaves 26.2 mm in total for the two connections to take up while maintaining a 50 mm gap.
That makes it a candidate to check—not a confirmed selection. Confirm the assembled insertion depths and dimensional tolerances before ordering.
Thread length ≠ does not equal insertion depth
NPT threads are tapered. Tightening advances the male end farther into the female connection, so the final insertion depth differs from the initial hand-tight position.
Keep these dimensions separate:
- Overall length: the distance between the nipple’s end faces.
- Threaded-end length: the dimension of the threaded portion shown on the applicable drawing.
- Assembly insertion depth: how far the nipple enters the mating port after assembly.
Do not use a drawing’s threaded-end length as the actual insertion depth. Follow the applicable assembly instructions and confirm the fit with the mating components. For a tightly controlled gap, check an assembled sample.
Also check the assembly sequence. A conventional nipple with right-hand threads at both ends cannot simply screw into two fixed, non-rotating female connections at once. The layout may need a union or another suitable connection arrangement.
Common Pipe Nipple Length Options
Close nipples
Close nipples have little or no unthreaded section between their threaded ends. They provide a compact connection.

For instance:
The 1/8-inch close nipple measures 19.1 mm overall.
The 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch close nipples measure 28.4 mm.
The 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch close nipples measure 38.1 mm.
The 1-inch close nipple measures 47.8 mm.
Check the size-specific drawing rather than choosing a close nipple by name alone.
Hex long nipples
Hex long nipples give you a longer overall length plus a hex section you can put a wrench on. They work well when you need more distance between components—as long as the thread engagement and assembly method are right.

Available lengths vary by thread size. For example, 1/2-inch NPT hex long nipples in 2, 3, 4, and 6-inch lengths, while the 1-inch NPT versions appear in 3 and 4-inch lengths.
Check wrench clearance as well as overall length. Enough space for the part does not always mean enough space to assemble it.
التعليمات
Q1. Does pipe nipple length include the threads?
Yes. Overall length includes both threaded ends. Measure between the two end faces, not just across the center section.
Q2. Is a 1/2-inch pipe nipple 1/2 inch long?
No. In “1/2-inch NPT nipple,” 1/2 inch identifies the nominal thread size. Specify the overall length separately.
Q3. How long is a close nipple?
Length varies by nominal size and product design. In our catalog, the 1/4-inch NPT close nipple measures 28.4 mm, while the 1/2-inch version measures 38.1 mm overall.
Q4. How do I choose a nipple length for a fixed gap?
Define the gap between the two port entrance faces. Then account for the confirmed insertion depth at each end.
Check tolerances, wrench clearance, and the assembly sequence before selecting the length. If both mating components are fixed, the connection arrangement may require a union.
